In the base game you can serve as a mercenary to a faction but this isn't the same at all. I like the Serve as a Soldier mod, you start off as a tier 1 then gain XP doing mundane tasks or taking part in battle and you can rank up. You get loaned the gear for your rank but can swap it with your own gear and mount if you want.
